Train Derails Near Delhi’s Shivaji Bridge, No Injuries Reported

A train coach somehow came off its tracks right by Shivaji Bridge in central Delhi yesterday afternoon. The big news? Nobody got hurt. It was a worrying few minutes for folks on board and the railway crew, but thankfully, it all ended well.

The train involved was one of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, specifically train number 64419. It was making its way from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, heading towards Nizamuddin Railway Station. The incident happened around 4:10 PM on Thursday, June 12, 2025, right on what’s known as the ‘down main line’ – a super busy railway stretch in the city. From what we hear, it was the fourth coach back from the engine that decided to take an unexpected detour off the rails.

Immediately after it happened, there was a moment of confusion, you can imagine. But railway officials and the police were on the scene in a flash. They made sure every single passenger was helped off the train safely. It’s a huge relief that absolutely no one – not the passengers, not the railway staff – suffered any injuries. And on top of that, there wasn’t any major damage to railway property or anything else nearby.

What Happened Next?
Once everyone was safe and sound, the railway teams swung into action. They separated the coaches that were still on the track and moved them away from the scene. Only that one derailed coach remained. Now, railway engineers are working hard to get it back onto the tracks. This kind of job isn’t quick; it needs special heavy-duty equipment to lift and maneuver such a weighty piece of machinery.
Senior railway officials, including Mr. Ashok Kumar Verma, who’s the General Manager of Northern Railway, and Mr. Pushpesh R. Tripathy, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for Delhi, personally came to the site. They were there to oversee everything and make sure the whole situation was handled perfectly. They also mentioned that they’ve put together an inquiry committee. Their job is to dig deep and figure out exactly what caused this derailment.

Why Do These Things Happen?
You know, train derailments can pop up for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it’s simply because the railway tracks are old and worn out. Other times, there might be some kind of issue with the train’s wheels or other parts. Even things like signal problems or plain human error can lead to these kinds of incidents. Here in India, with our enormous railway network, keeping tracks in top shape and making sure everything is just right is a never-ending challenge. There’s been talk that aging tracks, alignment issues, and not enough regular checks on things like bridges and tunnels can play a part in these derailments.

Indian Railways has really been pushing to make things safer. They’ve brought in new tech like ‘Kavach,’ which is an anti-collision system that can actually stop trains automatically if they get too close to each other. They also invest a lot in track renewal and use fancy machines to find any tiny flaws in the rails. Plus, there are ongoing efforts to get rid of dangerous unmanned level crossings and improve communication systems.
Impact on Other Trains

Even though this happened on a seriously busy line, railway officials have confirmed that train services on other nearby lines are still running smoothly. This means for most people traveling by train in Delhi, there shouldn’t be any big delays or changes to their plans. However, a few trains, like the New Delhi-Mumbai Central Tejas Rajdhani Express (Train No. 12952), had to be sent on different routes as a precaution while they worked on the derailed coach.

The railway authorities are laser-focused on clearing the line as quickly as possible and have told everyone not to stress too much. They’re also scrutinizing every detail of the incident to prevent anything similar from happening again and to keep train travel safe for all of us. Restoration work was still going on yesterday evening and was expected to be completed late Thursday, allowing some train services to resume.
